Backlit stone panels are becoming an increasingly popular feature in modern residential and commercial interiors. By combining the natural appearance of stone with integrated LED lighting, a standard feature wall can be transformed into a warm, illuminated architectural surface.
Unlike traditional stone installations, a Backlit Stone Panel system requires more than simply attaching the decorative panel to a wall. To achieve a beautiful and uniform lighting effect, the complete system—including the supporting frame, LED lighting, light diffuser, acrylic backing, stone panel, and electrical components—must be properly planned and installed.

Understanding the Backlit Stone Panel Structure
Before installation, it is important to understand how the complete backlit wall system works.
A typical installation consists of several layers:
1. LED Light Strips
LED strips provide the primary light source behind the translucent stone. They should be evenly positioned to minimize dark areas and excessive hot spots.
2. 10mm Transparent Acrylic Light Diffuser
A 10mm acrylic sheet is positioned between the LED lighting and the decorative stone surface. It helps diffuse and distribute the LED light more evenly across the panel.
This layer is particularly important for creating a softer and more uniform illumination effect.
3. 10mm Transparent Acrylic Structural Frame
The acrylic frame creates the supporting structure of the backlit panel assembly. It provides separation between the lighting system and the finished stone surface while helping maintain the overall shape and rigidity of the installation.
4. LED Side Lighting
Additional LED strips can be positioned around the perimeter of the frame. Proper spacing and positioning help distribute light across the entire illuminated surface.
5. 10mm Transparent Front Acrylic Sheet
A second 10mm transparent acrylic sheet is installed on the front of the lighting structure.
It creates a flat, stable supporting surface for the translucent stone panel and helps protect and reinforce the finished assembly.
6. Translucent Stone Panel
The decorative stone panel forms the final visible surface.
For a large-format panel such as 1200 × 3000 × 6mm, proper handling and a flat supporting structure are especially important. Although the panel is relatively thin, its large size means that two or more installers are recommended during handling and installation.
Step-by-Step Backlit Stone Panel Installation
Step 1 — Prepare the Wall and Electrical Supply
The first step is to create a solid and level supporting wall.
For a typical installation, a wooden stud frame can be constructed behind the backlit stone system. Make sure the structure is straight, stable, clean, dry, and capable of supporting the complete assembly.
The electrical supply should also be planned before closing the wall.
Install the required power outlet, wiring, LED driver or transformer in an appropriate accessible location according to applicable electrical requirements.
It is much easier to plan the electrical system at this stage than after the stone panel has been installed.
Step 2 — Install the 10mm Transparent Acrylic Frame
Assemble the 10mm transparent acrylic structural frame according to the dimensions of the stone panel.
Position the acrylic frame against the wooden studs and secure it using suitable screws or fastening hardware.
Before continuing, check both horizontal and vertical alignment carefully.
The frame should be completely level because any distortion at this stage can affect the final position of the large-format stone panel.
Step 3 — Install the LED Strips and Acrylic Diffuser
Install the LED light strips evenly inside the frame.
Uniform spacing is important. LEDs positioned too far apart may create visible dark zones, while LEDs installed too close to the stone surface may create concentrated bright spots.
After installing the LED strips, position the 10mm transparent acrylic diffuser sheet over the lighting system.
The purpose of this layer is to soften and redistribute the LED light before it reaches the translucent stone.
Always test the complete LED lighting system before installing the stone panel.
Check for dark areas, excessive brightness, visible LED points, inconsistent color temperature, or wiring problems while the lighting components are still easily accessible.
Step 4 — Install the Front Acrylic Supporting Sheet
Place the second 10mm transparent acrylic sheet onto the front side of the structural frame.
Secure it properly using screws, acrylic-compatible clamps, or the specified fastening system.
The front acrylic sheet should create a clean, flat, and stable surface because the translucent stone panel will be installed directly over it.
Before proceeding, clean the acrylic carefully.
Dust, fingerprints, debris, or adhesive residue trapped behind a translucent panel can become much more noticeable once the LED lighting is turned on.
Step 5 — Install the Translucent Stone Panel
Once the lighting and acrylic support structure have been tested, the decorative stone panel can be installed.
Apply a suitable clear or compatible structural adhesive, such as an appropriate MS polymer or silicone-based adhesive, to the back of the stone according to the adhesive manufacturer's requirements and compatibility with both materials.
Use suction cups to carefully lift and position the panel.
For a 1200 × 3000mm large-format panel, two or more installers are recommended.
Align the stone carefully before making full contact with the acrylic backing. Once correctly positioned, gently press the panel against the supporting sheet to create secure and even adhesion.
Avoid excessive localized pressure that could damage the panel.
Step 6 — Final Inspection and Lighting Test
After installation, clean the stone surface and remove any excess adhesive.
Turn on the LED system and inspect the complete wall from different viewing distances.
Look for consistent illumination, correct panel alignment, clean edges, and an even overall lighting effect.
The finished wall should allow light to travel through the translucent stone texture, emphasizing its natural patterns and creating depth that conventional wall panels cannot achieve.
Where Can Backlit Stone Panels Be Used?
Because backlit stone combines decorative material + lighting + architectural feature wall in one system, it can become a focal point rather than simply a wall finish.
Typical applications include luxury living-room TV walls, dining-room feature walls, reception desks, hotel lobbies, restaurant interiors, bars, spas, salons, retail stores, office reception areas, elevator lobbies, display walls and commercial feature walls.
In residential projects, a large illuminated stone panel can create a dramatic focal point without requiring an entire room to be covered in stone.

The Key to a Beautiful Backlit Stone Wall: Light Distribution
The quality of a backlit stone installation depends heavily on what happens behind the stone.
Simply placing LED strips directly behind a translucent panel does not necessarily produce a professional result. LED spacing, distance from the stone, diffusion, acrylic thickness, stone translucency, stone pattern and LED color temperature all influence the final appearance.
A well-designed system creates soft, continuous illumination that highlights the natural veins and patterns of the stone without making individual LED points obvious.
That is why we recommend testing the LED + acrylic diffuser + stone panel combination before completing the final installation.
When properly designed, the lighting does more than illuminate the wall—it reveals the texture and depth of the stone itself.
